What would constitute the ideal Local Executive?
The ideal Local Executive would consist of the following:
- President
- Vice-President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Chief Steward
- A Steward for each work unit or one per floor/tower (1 per 10-20 people)
- Trustees
- Members for the Health and Safety Committee, Audit Committee, Communications Committee (Newsletter) and Local
Employees Relations Committee
The President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, chief steward and local trustees are positions that are voted on by the general membership.
Trustees duties include:
- Examine all books, records and properties
- File audit report at least twice a year
- Make a full report to the 1st General Meeting following each audit
A Steward duties include:
- Each steward shall be responsible for representation of members in a working area
- To distribute information to the group
- To carry the group's concerns to the LEC
- To communicate LEC decisions to the group
- To enlist support of members of the group in the workplace actions and union campaigns
- To prepare and investigate grievances from the group
- To attend union educations whenever available/possible
A Chief Steward duties include:
- Duties of a shop steward
- Supervise and assist the shop steward
Treasurer duties include:
- Duties of a shop steward
- Responsible for proper administration of assets to the Local, including operating funds
Secretary duties include:
- Duties of a shop steward
- Attend all meetings of the Local and keep Minutes;
- Distribute notices to all members of the local;
- Answer and/or forward all pertinent correspondence;
- Forward all pertinent membership information to the appropriate union regional office
Vice-President duties include, but may not be limited to:
- Duties of a shop steward
- Perform presidential functions during absence of the President
- Accept and exercise such other duties and powers as may be designated by the Local Exec. Committee/Pres.
- May attend all functions of the Union in place of the President when President unable to attend
President duties include, but may not be limited to:
- Duties of a shop steward
- Enforce compliance with by-laws and regulations of the Union and Local
- Preside at Local meetings
- Be an ex-officio member of all Local committees
- Generally supervise the affairs and operations of the Local
- Carry out such other duties as may be prescribed by Local by-laws.
